11 th of July 2010 - Leaving the Canal |
Crew : | Helen and Andy | |
Destinations : | Dallens Bay. | |
Distance : | 19 miles |
Today we left the Caledonian Canal. We were out of the lock by 0900 with a Norwegian boat. We motored gently down Loch Linnhe as there wasn't much wind. The Norwegians seemed keen to keep up with us. However, when the weather deteriorated we seemed to gradually lose them. We passed through the Corran Narrows with Andy at the helm, making 10knots over the ground with 4 knots of tide pushing us through.

On the other side the water was very disturbed and I was glad Andy was at the helm as the boat was pushed from side to side by the washing machine beneath us. Any way the wind also increased now that we were exposed to the south west and we managed to sail under the mizzen and genoa in 35 knot gusts without issue, making 8.2 knots through the water.
As we approached Dallens Bay in Shuna Sound we were getting a bit pushed onto the island to port so we started the engine. The sea state settled as we headed to into the lee of Shuna Island and we picked up a buoy in time for lunch. It rained for much of the afternoon but cleared by evening.
