Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

11 th to 12 th of July 2011 - Fetlar

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : Wick of Tresta.
Distance : 12 miles

The swell wasn't too bad when we left Out Skerries through the north east entrance, after lunch. The wind was was on our nose so rather than tacking we decided to be lazy and motor sailed. It was only a couple of hours north to Fetlar and running the engine meant that we would have hot water and full batteries. We anchored in the bay on the south side of Fetlar, The Wick of Tresta. It was a lovely spot and we had it all to ourselves, apart from the birds and, later on, an otter. On the second day we explored ashore and went in search of the elusive red necked phalarope. Unfortunately they didn't turn up, but we saw a snipe and lots of wimbrel during our walk to Loch Funzie (finnie). We also saw a red throated diver sitting on it's nest close to the road. After this we paid a visit to the cafe for lunch and home made ice cream (for me anyway). We learned something of the history of the island in the heritage centre, then walked around the cliffs to our beach at Tresta. The colours of the grasses along the way were beautiful. We watched another yacht come and anchor in the bay and, on the beach, caught up with the very nice German couple on board.
