We left Fetlar once the tides had turned in our favour. As there was again very little wind we motored up the inside of Fetlar around the islands and up the east coast of Unst where we found the small pontoon on the inside of the harbour wall in Balta Sound. We were initially the only yacht and were met by a very friendly harbour master who gave us lots of information about where to shop and, importantly, hire bikes. In the harbour we watched the terns diving close to the boat for fish.

Thursday/Friday We were fortunate with the weather, so for the next few days we hired bikes to explore the north of the island around Hermaness, Haroldswick and Baltasound. Below are a few pictures from this time.

Saturday/Sunday Over the next few days boats came and went and moored on various parts of the harbour wall to shelter from the wind. Because of the Tall Ships race, our visit coincided with the Unst festival so we thought we would stay here for a few days. As it was, the weather took a turn for the worse with wind and rain so we had no choice but to stay put. Unfortunately this meant that less tall ships made it to Baltasound and the planned yacht races from Cullivoe to Baltasound and Baltasound to Walsay were rescheduled to miss out Baltasound altogether due to the weather.

Monday As the forecast appeared to be indicating an improvement we decided to leave the next day. Although there were various festivities planned by the locals we were getting a bit stir crazy and keen to get moving again. On our last evening it was just us and a yacht from Norway called Esmeralda rafted on us. The couple on board, Annette and Jan Fredrik invited us on board for coffee after supper and they told us of their past cruising adventures with their children, which took them across the Atlantic to Venezuela and Trinidad amongst other fantastic sounding destinations. They were also able to give us some advice on sailing in Norway as they live in Stavanger and keep their boat near to their home.
