For the next few days at least the weather looked good to sail up the coast to Lisbon. We decided to sail across the bay and anchor underneath the cliffs just this side of Cabo de Sao Vincente. We set the alarm for 0600 and were out of the entrance by 0700. A combination of the strong ebb and swell made for a rollercoaster ride out of the harbour. The smaller fishing boats went around the edge, missing the deep water channel and avoiding the overfalls which we had to motor through. Once out of the entrance, we sailed close hauled under the reefed mainsail and genoa. Gradually the wind dropped and we took out the reef and eventually had to resort to motor sailing for the last couple of hours. The breakwater at Baleeira was a welcome site and as we got in the lee of Cabo de Sao Vincente the swell calmed down and we found a place to anchor just outside a couple of yachts on visitors moorings. We were settled down for supper by 1800 and slept accompanied by the gentle rocking of the boat.
