Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

30 th of June 2011 - Back to sailing

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : Vaila Voe.
Distance : 30 miles

The winds were forecast from the north west today. We had a fairly leisurely start and were able to sail out of Scalloway Harbour through the north channel. We passed between a few small islands and out into the Deeps. We sailed up into Sandsound Voe to explore but then had to motor back out. Only one other boat, Charlotte, a Contessa 32, was in Scalloway and they left shortly after us. We followed their progress behind us for a short while, but then headed in our separate directions. We quickly returned to sailing as soon as the wind was abeam and made for Vaila Sound. After a quick look at Walls, where the ferry goes to Foula, we decided to anchor on the shore off Saltness as it looked like they were in the process of building a new pier at Walls and there wasn't a lot of space for us between the rocks and mooring buoys. We saw one other yacht all day and they were anchored off Vaila.
