31 st of May 2017 - Shakedown sail |
Crew : | Andy and Helen | |
Destinations : | Sandycove. | |
Distance : | 20 miles |
After a few last minute preparations, we left Crosshaven at 1125. The wind was south/south east force 3/4 so we motor sailed until we could change course to west. We then had a lovely sail under all three sails toward Kinsale. We made 8.5 knots through the water at one point so have decided that our log is now over reading. We will need to recalibrate this at some point now that it isn't being fouled by our sonar (see previous entries). It was sunny at times between drizzle and cloud, so we were able to try out our new Tilley Hats. We decided that these are the way to go, since we can't think how we could fit a Bimini in our cockpit.

We had sailed in to Sandycove, at the entrance to Kinsale Harbour, and were sitting in the cockpit with our arrival cup of tea by 1500. We were the only boat anchored, so had plenty of space to let out lots of chain. A bit of swell was coming into the bay but we decided the rocking motion would be a good way of getting our sea legs. The forecast was for the wind to go round to the south west so we hoped the swell would die down overnight. Despite the cold and grey, there were a couple of hardy swimmers. However, the bay was primarily just for us, the gulls, the cormorants and a few goats.
