Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

1 st to 4 th of August 2017 - Ria de Pontevedra

Crew : Andy and Helen
Destinations : Combarro.
Distance : 12 miles

We left our anchorage at 0950. The wind was gentle, however we sailed slowly out of the bay just using the engine briefly when we lost steerage. We practiced our sea shanties which seemed to bring on the wind. We also made pancakes underway for lunch. The sun shone and it was a lovely sail. As usual, the wind filled as we headed up the Ria, goose winging passed the small island to our anchorage. We had been expecting the wind to be from the north or north west, but the wind was coming up the Ria from the south west so it felt a little exposed initially. We anchored off the small town of Combarro, where we intended to spend a few days. The next day, we went alongside the pontoon at the marina where we stayed for two nights. We wandered the lovely narrow streets eating fish and drinking coffee. We had thought we might visit Pontevedra and were advised not to cycle and told by the tourist office where to get the bus. After an hour we gave up and decided Combaro was so lovely we would stay there for the day. Pontevedra was just not meant to be. On the morning we were intending to depart the weather was extremely wet and murky and there was very little wind so, after a late start, we went all of 200 metres away and dropped the anchor to await better weather.
