4 th of August 2018 - Anse de Bertheaume

We had decided the weather was looking good for a channel crossing in a few days time. In the meantime, the winds were coming from the north and north east so would be suitable for visiting Lampoul on the island of Ushant (Ouessant). The afternoon tides were turning north later and later so we decided to position ourselves to take the early morning northward tide through the Chenal de la Helle. This is the west branch of the Chenal du Four. The whole area is famous for its big seas caused by heavy weather and strong tides between the islands and mainland. Hence it is very important to have the tides in ones favour.

POINTE DE ST-MATHIEU THE FOLLOWING MORNING

We left our anchorage in Morgat around 1150 and had a nice gentle sail along the cliffs and across the big bay to the Anse de Bertheaume, a bay just to the east of Pointe de St-Mathieu, the start of the Chenal du Four. The recommended anchorage is tucked in behind a fort. However it was full of moorings and there wasn't much space for anchoring. We eventually found space to anchor away from the pot buoys. Despite it feeling quite exposed there was no swell and we had a peaceful night once the wind died down.
