We left our buoy at 0940 and had a gentle tack along the coast of the Ile de Ré in the sunshine. Unfortunately as we left the shelter of the island the seas built up and it turned into a bumpy close hauled sail, requiring 8 tacks in total. As we entered the river at Les Sables D'Olonne things quickly calmed down.
There was plenty of space on the visitors pontoon but the marina itself was very full so we were advised to stay where we were. It turned out that this was the best spot, giving us good access to the town. There were ferries crossing over from La Chaume on our side of the river to Les Sables D'Olonne. We enjoyed exploring the towns on both sides of the river. Les Sables D'Olonne is an attractive holiday resort with good shopping and beaches...if you like that sort of thing. However, there were also some surprises, like the small alleys and L'Ile Penotte where a woman has decorated the buildings with pictures made with shells. There was no sign of the Golden Globe Race that we missed the week before and we were to be leaving just before the Tour de France passed through. We we aren't really party people!
