We decided to spend the day sailing so were just aiming to get around the next headland, Cabo Peñas, to Avilés. We slipped our berth at 0955 and motored out of the harbour. We managed to get the sails up turn of the engine straightaway. Unfortunately our heading was to Crosshaven in Ireland. However, we continued on this track, managing to sail at around 4-5 knots. We made our first tack of the year and, 2 hours later, we were around Cabo Peñas heading south west for the entrance to the harbour mouth. This took us inland along a very busy industrial river with various interesting buildings and structures.
There was only one anchorage and it didn't look very inviting in the grey skies so we carried on up to the town where they have some pontoons. By 16.45, after sailing all day we took a berth inside the visitors pontoons. We tried to contact the harbour master but, having had no luck, we had a beer and made some tea, hoping we might have a free berth for the night. This was not to be and during supper he turned up to free us of some money. However, with the code to the gate we were able to walk into town and admire the rally cars assembling in the Plaza España, before heading for a bar.
