Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

10 th to 11 th of June 2012 - Was it all a dream?

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : The North Sea and Inverness Marina.
Distance : 206 miles

Sunday 10 th June - Monday 11 th June

An alarm call at 0600 am had us underway by 0730. The wind was on our nose so we motor sailed up the coast. 3 hours on watch 3 hours off watch. The sea state was fairly settled apart from at the entrance to The Firth of Forth. We were able to motor sail with mizzen and genoa for a while, but as we passed Fife Ness it was dead calm. It was pretty over cast and the night was quite dark but, apart from Aberdeen and Peterhead, we saw little traffic. There were a few pot markers but these were few and far between. As we passed around Rattray Head our auto pilot, George, died on us. This meant that for the rest of the passage we had to steer by hand. Fortunately it didn't rain on us. It seems we need some new parts for the autopilot, hopefully, not too difficult to organise from the UK.

Ship at anchor near Inverness Firth

As we approached Inverness Firth, we had a brief visit from a single dolphin and then another as we got to the marina. We arrived after 36 hours at sea, tired and in need of showers and beer. After over 400 miles sailing we were back where we had started 2 weeks earlier. However, we were looking forward to transitting the Caledonian Canal in the rain again.
