We left our berth at 0730 to catch the last of the ebb and then flood around the top of the Isle of Wight. We had a lovely sail as we headed south east. Unfortunately we then had to pass Selsey Bill heading east and then north east toward Shoreham and into the wind so we had to resort again to the engine. We could see the chimney at Shoreham for ages. We had decided to go to Shoreham as we aren't fans of the huge marina at Brighton. We contacted the lock gates 30 minutes before we arrived and the gate was opened as we entered the harbour. The entrance to the small lock we surprisingly narrow with awkward concrete corners, however we managed to squeeze in behind a pilot boat. They had a pontoon in the lock making it easy to tie up. Unfortunately it was also very high so when we came to leave, letting the bow swing out, the tender got caught and the lifting strop and painter were broken. Once we were tied up on the rickety pontoon these were easily fixed. There was quite a nice marina pub, but the marina facilities were pretty rubbish. It was surprisingly expensive so we were very keen to leave the following day. Needless to say we were watching the weather closely.
