Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

12 th to 15 th of April 2019 - Round Beachy Head

Crew : Helen and Andy
Destinations : Eastbourne.
Distance : 27 miles

We needed to have enough depth to get through the lock so decided to head out after lunch, After contacting the lock gates a second time we eventually got through the 1300 lock and headed out to sea. We had a pretty tedious motor sail along the coast in the lee of the South Downs so the sea was pretty flat. The cliffs were spectacular as usual. As we passed south of Beach Head the seas became more unsettled and the winds followed the cliffs around staying on our nose all the way. We had a slow, wet and bouncy motor for the last few miles past Eastbourne pier. The entrance to the Royal Sovereign Harbour was a welcoming site with their big friendly lock. We were tied up on a pontoon in time for supper.

The forecast continued to be for easterly winds of varying strength, for the following 3 days up to force 6, so we decided to spend a few days in Eastbourne before heading for Dover when the winds eased. We enjoyed walking around Eastbourne and took a hike along the coast and around Beachy Head.
