Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

12 th to 13 th of June 2011 - Lewis

Crew : Andy and Helen
Destinations : Stornaway.
Distance : 47 miles

We left our mooring at 8 am and motored across the Minch, heading for Scalpay lighthouse then through the Sound of Shiant.

The wind was quite light, but on our nose as the north easterly winds had finally turned up. Strong winds were forecast for later due to a low pressure system passing over the UK. As we got across to Harris, the wind picked up, but was still on our nose, so we had to motor sail up the coast. As we passed Kebock Head we were able to get a better angle on the wind and we sailed close hauled with Andy on the helm. The sea state was picking up so we had an exhilarating couple of hours heading in to Stornaway.

We were directed by the harbour master to raft up against a French yacht, Selene, behind a big blue lorry ferry, which we did. At low water this required a long climb up the ladder to get ashore. The French boat was one that we had seen last year and was a very yellow, metal boat with lots of original features.

The following day we went ashore for shopping and sightseeing. When we got back to the boat we had a visitor.

Fortunately the rain had cleared and we had a lovely evening on the boat in Stornaway and got chatting to a few fellow sailors.
