Speedwell of Rhu Ship's Log

28 th to 29 th of August 2016 - Crookhaven

Crew : Andy and Helen
Destinations : Crookhaven.
Distance : 18 miles

We left our mooring around 8.50am. Unfortunately a wasp was asleep on the steering wheel and I woke it up. He wasn't happy and stung my hand. However, after a bit of pain, we headed out from behind Bear Island and motored toward Mizen Head. The sun shone and for a while we were both standing on the aft deck watching dolphins swim in our bow wave.  There were increased numbers of kittiwakes around as well as the odd storm petrol. No whales though.

We entered Crookhaven Harbour around 1300 and picked up a mooring buoy before going ashore to explore. The local pub O'Sullivan's had a troop of Welsh dancers and clog dancers who we sat and watched in the sunshine whilst drinking beer. It was't clear how much the morning would cost as they had all been free so far. However, it turned out they were €10 so we decided to pay for one night and then decide what to do the following day.

WHITE STRAND BEACH

After one night on the buoy we decided to move and anchor in the harbour to give us more flexibility to move as and when we chose. We quickly set the anchor and then took the tender in the fog to White Strand beach at the head of the bay. It was very atmospheric with curlews and oystercatchers nearby. The tide was out so there was lots for them to eat on the beach.  We walked along the road to Barley Cove,  crossed the river by the pontoon bridge and  had our lunch in the dunes. By the time we returned to the harbour the fog cleared and the sun came out. In the evening we managed to go ashore for dinner without getting wet.
